Sisal Flooring: Natural, Strong, and Timeless

Hard-wearing natural fibre flooring for Sunshine Coast homes.

Sisal is the original natural fibre floor covering. Woven from the long leaf fibres of the Agave sisalana plant, it has the strength of a working textile, the texture of a fine basketweave, and the natural warmth that synthetic carpets cannot quite replicate.

It is one of the toughest plant fibres on the market, naturally biodegradable, and quietly elegant in a way that suits both relaxed coastal homes and more considered modern interiors.

At Kawana Flooring we stock the full Floorspace sisal range, an Australian specialist supplier with fifty years of experience in natural fibre floor coverings. The range covers a wide spectrum of weaves and tones, from fine ribbed and fine rustic styles in pale neutrals through to heavy rustic textures in deeper natural shades. Wall-to-wall installations and custom-bordered rugs are both available.

Why sisal?

Sisal has been a favourite of designers and natural-home enthusiasts for decades. Here are the qualities that keep people coming back to it:

Genuinely hardwearing. Sisal fibres are among the strongest natural fibres available, which is why the same material has historically been used for rope and twine. It holds up beautifully in living rooms, hallways, and stair runners.

Naturally textured. Every Floorspace weave has a distinct character, from the fine, refined grid of the Fine Ribbed range to the chunky basketweave of the Heavy Rustic styles. The texture brings life to a floor without competing with the rest of the room.

A clean neutral palette. Sisal takes dye beautifully, and the Floorspace range covers warm honey tones (Castlemaine, Latte), cool stone tones (Granite, Slate, Pewter), deeper natural browns (Woodland, River Rock), pale neutrals (Quartz), and a true black (Raven). Easy to layer with timber, stone, linen, and wool.

Sustainable and biodegradable. The agave plant is fast-growing, requires very little water, and the fibre is fully biodegradable at the end of its life. The Floorspace range is finished with a foam backing for stability and acoustic performance.

Anti-static and breathable. Natural fibres help regulate indoor humidity and do not attract dust the way synthetic surfaces can. A good fit for homes where indoor air quality matters.

  • The Floorspace sisal collection we stock spans five distinct weave families plus a standout standalone style, each available in a thoughtful range of natural colours.

  • Fine Ribbed Sisal.

A refined, tightly woven ribbed pattern that sits flat and even underfoot. Available in Castlemaine (warm honey-gold), Granite (multi-tonal grey and beige), Quartz (pale sandy-neutral), Slate (deep charcoal grey), and Raven (rich black). The most understated of the five families, well suited to bedrooms, studies, and formal living areas where you want texture without visual noise.

  • Heavy Ribbed Sisal.

The bolder sibling of the Fine Ribbed family. Heavier yarn, more pronounced ribbing, more presence underfoot. Available in Castlemaine, Granite, and Slate. A good middle option when the Fine Ribbed feels too quiet and the Heavy Rustic feels too rugged.

  • Fine Rustic Sisal.

A small, refined basketweave with more texture than the Ribbed styles but less weight underfoot. Available in Castlemaine, Granite, Quartz, Slate, and Raven. The most versatile of the five families and a popular choice for whole-home installations where one floor needs to work across multiple rooms.

  • Heavy Rustic Sisal.

A chunky, characterful basketweave that brings real presence to a room. Available in Granite (cool grey with natural variation), Latte (warm milky beige), Woodland (rich golden-brown), and River Rock (mid earth-brown). Particularly well suited to entry halls, hallways, and rooms where you want the floor to do some of the talking.

  • Herringbone Sisal

A classic herringbone pattern woven in natural sisal, which softens the sometimes-formal feel of herringbone with the warmth of a natural fibre. Available in Castlemaine, Granite, and Pewter (cool silvery grey). A favourite for entries, hallways, and formal living rooms.

  • Autumn Slate Sisal.

A standalone style with a distinctive heathered, multi-tonal slate finish that brings depth and quiet movement to a room without committing to a strong pattern. The only sisal in the range with this particular tonal mix.

  • Wall-to-wall installation, custom rugs with bound edges in cotton, jute, leather, or linen, and standard stair runners are all available across the range. Talk to us about which weave and colour will suit your space, traffic levels, and styling.

Sisal FAQs

Is sisal suitable for stairs and hallways?

Yes. Sisal is one of the most hardwearing natural fibres available and is a popular choice for stair runners and hallways. The Fine Ribbed and Fine Rustic weaves are particularly well suited to stair installations because of their tight, even surface.

How does sisal feel underfoot?

Firmer than wool carpet and slightly textured. Most people describe it as crisp rather than soft. It is comfortable for walking and sitting but is not a barefoot-luxury floor in the way that a thick wool carpet would be.

Can I have it in a wet area?

No. Sisal absorbs moisture and can mark from water and humidity, so it should not be installed in bathrooms, laundries, or directly adjacent to wet areas. It also needs to be kept away from prolonged dampness underfoot, so it is best installed in dry, well-ventilated rooms.

How do I clean sisal?

Regular vacuuming with a strong upright or canister vacuum is the main maintenance task. Spills should be blotted (not rubbed) and dealt with quickly, since sisal can mark from water and many cleaning fluids. We recommend an annual professional dry clean to keep the fibre in good condition. Floorspace recommends specialist sisal cleaners over standard carpet cleaning chemistry.

Does sisal fade in direct sun?

Natural sisal will lighten in colour with prolonged direct sun exposure. The change is subtle and even, and many people find it adds to the character of the floor, but in rooms with very strong all-day sun we recommend window furnishings to slow the process.

Can I get a custom-size rug?

Yes. Floorspace specialises in custom natural fibre rugs with bound or banded edges in cotton, jute, leather, or linen. Bring us your room dimensions and we can put together a quote.

Sisal is a floor with quiet confidence. It is not flashy, it does not chase trends, and it ages with character rather than wearing out.
