Choosing & Understanding Flooring
What makes hybrid flooring so popular in Queensland homes?
Hybrid flooring combines the look of timber with the practicality of vinyl. Its rigid stone-plastic core and attached underlay make it solid, moisture-resistant, and simple to install. It’s ideal for busy Sunshine Coast homes wanting the warmth of timber without the upkeep.
What’s the difference between vinyl plank and hybrid flooring?
Both mimic timber, but vinyl is glued directly to the slab while hybrid floats above it. Vinyl is 100% waterproof and perfect for wet areas; hybrid is slightly thicker and softer underfoot. Knowing this helps you match each product to the right room.
How is engineered timber different from laminate or hybrid floors?
Engineered timber has a real wood veneer bonded to a plywood core, so every board is unique. Laminate and hybrid use printed designs. Engineered timber costs more but offers genuine warmth, natural character, and long-term value for premium homes.
What type of carpet holds up best to kids, pets and high traffic?
Loop-pile carpets made from solution-dyed nylon are tough, easy to clean and ideal for hallways or stairs. The tight loops spring back instead of crushing, keeping your carpet looking fresh for years.
Can artificial turf handle Queensland’s weather?
Yes. Today’s UV-stabilised synthetic grasses are built for full sun, salt air and heavy rain. They drain fast, resist fading and stay green with minimal maintenance. Perfect for outdoor areas around decks or pools!
Installation & Preparation
How long does installation usually take?
Carpet: 1–2 days. Vinyl plank: about a week for a full-home refloor. Direct-stick timber: up to two weeks. Most Sunshine Coast homes take 2–3 days start to finish.
How soon can I walk on my new floors after installation?
Carpet and floating floors (hybrid, laminate) can be walked on straight away. Vinyl and direct-stick timber need about 6–12 hours for adhesive to cure before moving furniture.
What should I do before the installers arrive?
Start packing early! Box loose items, clear rooms, and park cars outside for space. Read your quote carefully so you know what’s included, then follow the pre-install checklist we email you.
Do I need to move my own furniture?
If you’re able, yes. It saves time and cost. If you can’t, we can help move heavy items; just let us know in advance so we can allow extra time.
Do you remove old flooring before installation?
Always. We lift and dispose of old carpet, vinyl or tiles and prepare the slab properly. Some floors can go over tiles, but we prefer to start fresh for the best finish.
What if you discover issues with the subfloor after the old flooring is removed?
Sometimes hidden moisture or unevenness only shows once the floor is lifted. If that happens, we’ll stop, explain the issue, and provide a revised quote before continuing. No surprises, no shortcuts.
What happens if my subfloor is uneven or damp?
Uneven or damp subfloors cause most creaks and failed warranties. We can grind, vacuum or apply self-levelling compounds up to 50 mm, and if moisture is high, we’ll use membranes before laying new flooring. Skipping this leads to lifting, bubbling or mould and voids warranties.
Can I install the flooring myself?
If you’re handy with tools, then hybrid or laminate are DIY-friendly. Just make sure the subfloor is level and dry. Carpet and direct-stick floors should always be professionally installed to maintain warranty coverage.
Care, Longevity & Value
How do I know which flooring will suit my family best?
Start with how you live. Busy home with kids, pets and beach days? Vinyl planks or hybrid are durable, waterproof and easy to clean. Want softness underfoot? Carpet is perfect for bedrooms and lounge. See the “Fast Facts” on each product page or visit our Sunshine Coast showroom for hands-on advice.
What’s the biggest mistake people make looking after their floors?
Ignoring Queensland’s sun! UV light fades both hard floors and carpets. Tint windows, use blinds, and keep spare planks or carpet for future repairs once products are discontinued.
Which flooring gives the best long-term value?
Family homes: glued-down vinyl planks plus nylon loop carpet in bedrooms. High-end homes: engineered timber and wool carpet. The right product, properly installed and cared for, can last 15–25 years.
How do flooring warranties actually work?
Kawana Flooring covers every installation with a 12-month workmanship warranty. Product warranties come from manufacturers (usually 15–20 years) for the original purchaser. We handle the process if an issue arises, so you’re never left chasing a supplier.
